Diesel Mechanic/Truck Driver

Diesel mechanic/service-truck driver is primarily responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the diesel fleet for logistics and the agricultural spreading equipment for Ag. It is the diesel mechanics responsibility to fix any equipment that breaks down on the road or in the field in company assigned service truck.  The mechanic will be supervised by the shop supervisor.

Job Description

The diesel mechanic/service-truck driver will be responsible for the repairs and maintenance on the fleet of diesel trucks in our logistics fleet as well as the ag spreading equipment.  He/she will be on-call with the service truck when they are not in the shop.  He/she may also be required to assist in the repairs and adjustments of hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and load packers on dump trucks or any other mine equipment.  He/She inspects repairs and adjusts diesel power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, mold boards and scarifies on graders.  He/She must also inspect, adjust and repair gasoline power units.   He/She will be responsible for installs, replacements or adjustments to filters, belt or similar object to maintain equipment. 

The diesel mechanic/service-truck driver must have the ability to diagnose defects in heavy duty equipment.  They also need to be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions in the English language, and complete forms to record or report information in standard format as specified by the form.  He/She is expected to be efficient when it comes to reading, understanding and applying information from charts, graphs and manuals.  

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • The Mechanic must know the hazards of his job and it trained in safety precautions of the trade.  And be able to communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
  • He/She will be required to work in all kinds of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • He/She must be able to remain in a standing position for extended periods of time and must be capable of lifting arms above should level to install and remove parts on the equipment.
  • He/She must be able to bend or stoop repeatedly over time to check tires or make any repairs.
  • He/She must be able to lift at least 50lbs and carry it for a distance, in a safe manner and with the proper safety equipment.
  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills

  • The mechanic must have skills in the care and use of hand and power tools employed in all phases of heavy equipment, diesel, mechanical maintenance and repair work.  His/Her skills may also include the use of automotive serving equipment such as A/C recycler, hydraulic jack, or emission analyzer.
  • Must have at least 3 years’ experience as a skilled diesel mechanic, including some experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty construction or firefighting equipment.  Apprenticeship work may qualify.
  • He/She is required to have some welding knowledge as well as experience in the field.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
